here in washington, d.c. we're not so sure we're getting out of town yet. >> they should be plans you can cancel if case you have to go right back to work. let me ask a question. jessica says pressure is a great motivator. talk about pressure last night on speaker boehner, couldn't get enough support from his own party for his plan. what does that mean for any kind of bipartisan plan they might be working out? >> it really does illustrate how difficult it is going to be for democrats to even achieve what the president laid out tonight, a scaled down version. the speaker himself said a couple of times today that he believes that the reason why he didn't get even the majority of the caucus to support him was because of a lot of difficulty voting to raise taxes, voting for anything that can be perceived as a tax increase. well, what the president is talking about even scaled down version is definitely raising taxes. and raising taxes on people making $250,000 or more, at least households, so that's going to be difficult to do. that's why reality check here, talking to democrats and repub

. from washington our investigative correspondent live at newtown high school. let me start with you, pete. what's the latest on the investigation and the question that investigators said they will tell us at some point which is how closer are we to knowing why? >> not much that i know of, chuck. they had been hopeful that they could extract some information from the computers that he had in the home. he was very into computers, they say. he was very socially with drawn. he was very engaged with computers. they say before he left his mother's house on the morning that he shot and killed her while she was sleeping, he damaged extensively his computers that he took the hard drive out and tried to tamper with the inside of it and pulled the disk out and did a lot of damage to it. it's not clear whether they will be able to extract information and they will try their best and there is hope they will find something. there was no letter or note left behind. he was not someone who apparently was involved in social media. he didn't post things on websites or chat rooms. there is precious lit

winter here, that they were planning on moving, that she thought about possibly going to washington state, possibly enrolling her son in a college there. we've been able to trace a little bit of his academic history, wolf. we can tell you, right now, there is no known connection to the sandy hook elementary school. he first appears in public records as a freshman in high school back in 2007, and at that time, we spoke to a security director, who said that adam lanza immediately was identified as a child that needed to be watched. not because he was a threat to other people, that he was so gawky and so awkward that security officials felt that others may be a threat to him. so not only did they keep an eye on him, but also he was, at that time, assigned a school psychologist. he left that school in about 2008. he enrolled in classes at a nearby university, just about 15 minutes from here. he was taking computer science, macro economic, american history. this is a 16-year-old kid, mind you, he was taking those classes. in 2009, he just fell off the grid, never went back to the school. he to

outside of the white house in washington, d.c. earlier today, president obama ordered flags to be flown at half staff nationwide in tribute to the victims of this terrible tragedy. in an emotional address, he said this to the nation. >> i know there's not a parent in america who doesn't feel the same overwhelming grief that i do. the majority of those who died today were children. beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old. they had their entire lives ahead of them. birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own. >> reporter: the president, incredibly emotional as he . a masser of innocent tiny children and the weapons used nothing short of terrifying. our susan candiotti has been following the developments today. three different weapons found in different places, very, very dangerous weapons. >> that's right. two of the weapons were found on the shooter himself n the classroom where he was found dead. one of them is a glock and the other is a cigging sauer. both handguns. a third weapon was found in a car in a vehicle, may have been his outside of the school. >>

to that? >> well, it carries enormous weight in washington when you look at the amount of money the nra spends to lobby congress, members of both parties, on k-street, a lot of money to influence elections across the country, not just in these last fall elections, but particularly in the 2010 midterms. they're influential in that way, but it is a moment as bill said for congress to look at this. and also for the white house to make decisions, there's a number of things that the president could choose to do through executive order. you're not hearing any discussion of that at this point while the grief is so raw and so poignant. who knows what's going to happen here? as bill points out there's been so many tragedies like this and there could be a moment where you look at the timing politically. the president has just won the election so there's no worries for him. but the midterm elections are coming up while many democrats fear losing their seat, many democrats represent more liberal districts and republicans represent conservative districts. >> we brought this up earlier in the broadca
